design with a purpose
To make mental health accessible, we have to start with the phone in people’s pockets. Working with clinicians, we developed content to help people address their sleep and anxiety.
For this project, I was the lead content designer and junior designer working on the Big Health apps.

define the problem
The original Sleepio (sleep disorders) and Daylight (anxiety) apps were effective, but needed to evolve with its users. Early analysis revealed it was time for a redesign. How might we design a new series of lessons effective, engaging, and clinically-sound?
discover the users
help from professionals
In order to develop activities, experiences, and lessons that resonate with our audience, we had to work with a panel of certified clinicians and mental health experts. We used their insights to hold ourselves to a high and accurate standard.
user interviews
There’s a difference between anxiety in a medical journal and someone describing their own experience to you. We conducted over 22 rounds of user interviews to fully understand what works for our audience, what is effective, and what doesn’t help at all.
develop ideas
idea new lessons
When our content library is small, people tend to check out and never return (please note the library pun). By increasing our content library, we’ll improve overall retention and address a wider patient population.
idea discoverability
Certain features in the app (like sleep tracking or in-the-moment anxiety support) don’t always get the love they deserve. We can surface these features early and often to improve overall discoverability.
idea personalized pathways
Mental health isn’t a one-size-fits-all, so why should our app be? We can introduce new opportunities to learn more about the user, and personalize the order of the existing learning modules based on their experience.
idea easier onboarding
Sleepio and Daylight are available through insurance providers, but much like any insurance experience — it’s hard to know when you’re covered. We can make this experience simpler by adding clearer instructions.
deliver solutions
After a year and a half of work, we were able to create a new visual identity for Daylight and Sleepio, add four new therapeutic lessons, create two new introductory videos (my first time storyboarding!), and help over 5,000 users get back to good mental health.
